Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

I hope that you all have a fabulous Christmas filled with lots of memories and laughter. We hope that you also remember the real reason for Christmas - the birth of Jesus Christ.

Wishing you a Happy New Year - may this one be the best yet!

The Skinny on Breastfeeding

I always knew I would do it when I had kids. After all, what could possibly be any better and more natural for your baby?! It was the ultimate experience as a mother! ...or so I thought.

Breastfeeding. Nursing. Whatever you want to call it.

**Disclaimer** I'm writing this purely to document my experience and maybe offer some understanding to other mother's who've struggled with this subject. I am not writing to pass judgement or offend anyone who may not agree with what I have to say. This is just my experience thus far - take it or leave it.

I lived my whole life around women who breastfed. My mom had five kids and breastfeed each one of us until we were at least a year old. Each one of my sisters (there are 4 of them) breastfed or are breastfeeding exclusively until they started solid foods. When I met Bobby, I found out that his Mom used to be a nurse who helped new mom's with breastfeeding. I had a LOT of great resources around me. I have no excuse to be unsuccessful at this, right?

Throughout my pregnancy, I had visions of getting in touch with my inner-hippie. Not the drug part of that, obviously, but the more natural, environmentally-friendly, earth-loving side of being a hippie. Bobby and I decided early on to use cloth diapers. Although we mainly made that decision for cost reasons, I love that we're not pouring through disposable diapers that just generate waste. You can read more about our decision to cloth diaper HERE. I also really wanted to make our own baby food. Not knowing exactly what goes into the jarred stuff, I just felt better making my own. This was also a cost-saving decision. If I'm staying at home and preparing food for Bobby and me, there was no reason I couldn't prepare a little extra for Camden as well. Lastly, I make an effort to purchase organic clothing and shoes, buy toys from local toy stores when I can, and also purchase organic foods to prepare for Camden.

In my efforts to be conscious of the world and its elements around us, it was only the next step to want to exclusively breastfeed (EBF) as well. With every decision we've made in regards to baby products, we always consider the cost and the environmental impact.

So, nine months later, Baby Camden George arrives and I have grand hopes of breastfeeding right after he was placed on my chest. I went through a medication-free labor (no epidural or pain medication), so nursing right away was very important to me. After they placed him on my chest when he was born, I went right to nursing and tried to get him to latch. No such luck. He just laid there looking at me (which was totally fine with me - he was, and is, really cute!). The next morning, I met with the hospital's lactation consultant. She stayed with me for a little while to see how we were doing with nursing. Since Camden still wasn't latching, she recommended that I use a Nipple Shield. There was not much for Camden to latch on to, if you get what I mean! Using the shield helped him latch on ok, but he wouldn't stay there.

After a few worrisome days, my milk finally came in....with bounty. We were home from the hospital at that point, but Camden was hardly staying latched for more than a few minutes. He would pull off and scream after only a few minutes of eating. Right after having given birth, this is the last thing I wanted... lots and lots and lots and lots of tears and prayers later, I called the lactation consultant again, hoping she could help. Since it was a Saturday, I couldn't pay her a visit, so Bobby suggested that I call his mother, the former lactation consultant.

It was at this moment that I completely lost it. There was crying before, but now there was sobbing. I honestly felt like a failure that I wasn't successful with nursing, and now I had to expose that reality to someone who knew me. My pride took a big blow that day, but I had no choice. My baby had to eat and I was determined to breastfeed. My Mother-in-Law came down that next day (praise the Lord!) to help me and Camden. Being on the modest side, it was a little strange at first having my Mother-in-Law helping me with this issue, but I needed to get over myself. My baby was hungry and unhappy and we both needed help. She worked with me all afternoon. I knew all the techniques (I had read BabyWise and The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding) and was doing them properly....it was Camden who didn't want to cooperate. He would eat for a minute or two, then pull off, arch his back and start screaming. It was so sad, and every part of me just wanted to ease his crying.

In her experience in the labor and delivery ward where she used to work, she said that some babies just needed to be taught how to nurse. Some babies "got it" and some didn't. So when Camden went to pull off (and there was no way he could have ingested enough food), she held his head on and "latched" to show him that he had to stay on for more than a few minutes! Thankfully, after the second or third nursing session, he started to get it. It was also helpful during that time to nurse him in the "football hold," as opposed to the "cradle hold," which I was doing before. Once Camden got the hang of it, we went back to the Cradle Hold since it was more comfortable for me. (Thank you Mom B - I am beyond grateful for your help and support that afternoon!)

After that afternoon, nursing got better, but only a little bit. He still would only stay latched for 5 minutes at a time, or only take one side. However, he would be fine for the 2.5-3 hour period in between nursing. He'd even be happy! There would be days he would eat fine, and others where it was a struggle. I can remember nursing him in bed, trying everything I could, and just crying, praying - pleading - to God that this would get easier. After all, he designed women so that we would feed our babies this way. What did women do in ancient days when electric breast pumps or formula didn't exist??

To this day, nursing Camden is not easy. He's one distracted baby! Thanks to the methods in BabyWise that suggest feeding your baby right after he wakes up, Camden has adapted much better to nursing during those times. When he's tired, he just wants to sleep...not be held and not nurse. In a panic during the early days, I went and purchased a baby scale to keep in his nursery. It's similar to the one used in our pediatrician's office, and it gave me complete peace of mind, knowing that Camden was getting enough milk AND that he was gaining weight steadily (which is what the doctor checks for). THIS is the scale that we bought and I love having it - even now.

Nursing has been a huge blow to my pride, which I admit, I needed. Not everything works the way you want it to, but with diligence and faith that this is how the Lord intended these things to work, I kept working at it. I often challenge myself to "break out of my comfort zone" with nursing. This summer, we went to the beach and instead of nursing him on the bed like I always do, I nursed him right on the beach with the wind in our hair. He didn't seem to mind, although it was pretty hot. When I travel up to Annapolis with the baby and there isn't a quiet room around, I'll nurse him in the back seat of our car. Thank goodness for stores like Nordstrom that has a "mother's room" with comfortable chairs, dim lighting, a changing table and sink. We are getting ready to travel overseas with Camden in a few days, so I'll be forced to nurse him in the airport and on the plane. I used to worry what people would think if I nurse in public - and I still do! (I don't care what people say about losing your modesty after child birth, I'm still pretty modest!) But I swallow my fears because it really is a very natural thing to do.

So today, Camden is almost 8 months old - am I really just enjoying it. I'd like to nurse for at least a year. We've only just started solid foods about 2 months ago, but he still needs milk for all the nutrients he won't get from food yet. We are still using the nipple shield (I've tried to wean several times unsuccessfully) and I'm ok with that, if it means he'll continue to nurse. I pump almost every day to build up a supply in the event I need to stop nursing for whatever reason. We give Cam a bottle every once in a while, or if I'm away from him for more than 3 hours at a time. We're still learning, but it's gotten much, much better since the beginning.

So for all you breastfeeding Mom's who may struggle with it... stick with it! There is hope if you are determined to continue nursing. Here are some legit resources that really helped me with breastfeeding:

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but if you have any questions or comments, leave them and I will post them on here. Good luck, nursing mamas!

Good Morning Sunshine

Our boy has been under the weather for the past few days... stuffy nose, probably sore throat and a little cough. This morning, Mama woke up with a sore throat. Great. Right before Christmas AND right before we leave the country. Lovely.

I love watching Camden sleep... even since he was a baby, he just looks so peaceful and sweet. Yesterday morning, I caught a few pictures of him before he woke up to eat. Despite his facial expression, he was quite cheerful!

33 Weeks + Almost Christmas!

It's Christmas already?! How in the world did that happen? Just like everyone else, we've been crazy busy these past few months. The time so easily slips away...I mean, I have an almost-eight-month-old on my hands already!!! (As soon as I say that to myself, my neurosis kicks in and tells me that I NEED to start planning his Year birthday party, like, yesterday. Calm down, Melissa.)

We've really enjoyed spending the Christmas season with our little Peanut. We've been reading the different accounts of the Christmas story in the bible, we've even enjoyed rhyming out "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on occasion. Most of all, I think Camden enjoys touching the Christmas tree. We took Camden to see Santa, and we've been singing all the Christmas songs I can think of (or remember all the words to). Of course, I'm determined not to make Christmas a commercial frenzy for our son, even though I'm sure he'll learn soon enough what our society has made it...BUT, Bobby and I are trying hard to keep Baby Jesus as the focus. Christian families out there - what are some fun traditions you do with your kids that remind us of the real meaning of Christmas?

Anyway, our boy is 33 weeks old this week (just shy of 8 months old) and is still growing like crazy. He's learned how to crawl correctly, and on a consistent basis now...which means he is FAST. We've also added in a lot more solid foods to his diet, which I'm now regretting because changing diapers is DISGUSTING. It was very tolerable before solid foods, actually, but now, it's just gross. In the last week, we've added Acorn Squash, Baked Potatoes, Spinach and some Mango (thanks Aunt Christina!). He loves vegetables and is not so keen on fruits!! Strange. He definitely doesn't get that from me. Anyway, his one-two meal times a day are the most fun for me.

So, here he is, folks.

Just a few pictures during "naked baby time" today. He was feeling a bit under the weather, poor guy.

Have I told you how much this boy loves to be without clothes?

Help me, Rhonda. Those eyes. Those cheeks! I've been kissing them all day long because he's been so snuggly and constantly rattling off, "mamamamamamama." What's a Mama to do!?

Now that he can crawl, every door in the upstairs is closed so he can reach the door stop. I know this is not a toy and he can pinch his fingers, but I only let him do it for the picture!

Enjoy the last few days leading up to Christmas!! I always get the blues once Christmas is over, don't you?? I love this time of year.

34 Weeks + The Evolution of Our Shoots

Time is still ticking away, and our sweet boy keeps doing new stuff! These last few weeks have really been amazing as I feel Camden has really learned or developed something new almost every few days. It's really crazy.

Starting late last week, Camden started pulling himself up on things: couch, stairs (no, no!), crib, mama's leg... the boy wants to MOVE and crawling just isn't cutting it anymore. Speaking of crawling: he was crawling for a few days a couple of a weeks ago, but then reverted back to "inch-worming." I suppose he was able to move a bit faster that way. So, starting again yesterday, he started crawling the correct way again, but it's still not consistent yet.

Also in the past few days, he's been rattling off some new noises, which is so cute to hear (ok, I'm a bit biased, but really... are little baby sounds the most adorable things ever?!). His newest sound sounds a little like "doy-doy-doy-doy-dah." He'll just sit there playing and rattle off his new noise. Occasionally, he'll throw in a little fishy kiss, which we've been working on lately. He doesn't direct it to anyone yet, but he's starting to make the movement with his lips and make the kissing sound. He'll watch me do it, and I can see the wheels cranking in his head to get his face to do it too :) It's so funny!

Baby continues to wave at EVERYTHING. Cat walking by? WAVE! Daddy coming home from work? WAVE! Little People spit out of his mouth? WAVE! Strange folks at the Post Office? WAVE!

We're still working in some solid foods as of late. I must admit that I'm not consistent with it because breast feeding is so easy and convenient! We're also going out of the country soon, and I don't want to travel with a ton of food supplies. Right now, he really enjoys holding and sucking on carrot sticks, apple slices and pear slices. He doesn't care much for the cooked versions of these foods, but we're working on it. I suppose that if I were consistent with it, he might like them a little more. Oh well. It doesn't bother me too much and he doesn't seem to mind either!

So here are Cam's weekly pictures and a little narrative of how our weekly shoots go:

The final product:

"Hi Camden! Can you look at Mama, please and stop chewing on the toggles on your sweater??"

"Ok, if you won't look at me, maybe you'll look attttt.....

....HENRY!!!!" (Henry is Camden's little, stuffed monkey that he sleeps with - instant smiles. Always.)

"See?? Happy Boy!" Smile lasted all of .25 seconds.

Ok, fine. Henry wins and Mama has 43895 pictures of Camden chewing on his sweater toggles. Oh well.

SANTA!

We met Santa Claus himself on Sunday...he visited California, Maryland a little early just to meet our little guy (and a few other sugar-covered children from our neighborhood).

Our Santa didn't smell like sausage or cheese (See the move "Elf" for that reference), but he was a bit on the skinny side... either way, I think Camden was quite intrigued with Santa's beard, as he tried to grab it a few times. Here's Camden's FIRST visit with Santa for his first Christmas. I am so excited! Camden is too...he's been playing with an empty cardboard roll of wrapping paper for the last 20 minutes. Who says kids need a bunch of expensive toys?!

Camden's Christmas Greeting

A little Christmas message for you:

I don't know what it means, but it certainly sounds profound.

And some attempts at a Christmas Card picture.

We'ere In Trouble Now!

Bobby was watching Camden last night while I went to some meetings. While I was gone, I think he figured out just how quick Camden is aaannnddd.... his new "tricks."

Before he put Camden to bed, they were playing around on the floor. Bobby said he turned his back for a minute and found the baby doing this:

Once Bobby recorded him doing that, he went to e-mail it to his parents on his phone. When he put the phone down, he looked back at the baby doing this:

It looks like he's "planking," no?! Baby planking. On the stairs. If you don't know what planking is, you need to watch THIS (watch the full episode if you have time, it's hilarious). Either way, this means one thing: let the baby training begin! Ugh, I didn't think I'd have to start this early. 7 months old. Really!?

So bed time comes around and Bobby put Camden down - awake - like we normally do. He usually makes a few noises, complains a little, then passes out. However, last night Bobby said he heard giggles...then crying...then giggles...then more crying. He went up to check on Camden and this is what he walked in to:

Time to move the crib mattress down, I think!!!

31 Weeks

Oh poor dear. This has been a rough week for Camden George. My normally sweet and cheerful babe has cut two more teeth since last week. That makes a total of FOUR teeth in the last 2 weeks, for a grand total of SIX teeth all together. His naps have been all mixed up and he has trouble going to sleep on his own (put down in his crib awake) - something he's been doing since he was a few weeks old. Ugh. At least this is temporary, and his night time sleep is still uninterrupted. When he's awake, he is still quite happy. Thankfully.

New thing this week: Camden has started WAVING! We've been practicing and he only does it occasionally, but it's definitely in the right context: saying "hi" to Daddy when he gets home from work!

I can't believe he's 7 months old now.

Here's my boy:

He's been chewing on his tongue when there is nothing to chew on. It's kind of funny, until there's a pool of drool on the floor next to him.

Camden LOVES to be naked. Loves it. Every time we get him ready for a bath, he shakes and squeals! To give him a little "freedom" during the day, he usually has 10 or 15 minutes of "Naked Baby Time" in his room. It makes him a very happy baby. I just hope he doesn't want to continue this activity when he starts school, or we might have a problem...

30 Weeks

This is a BIG week for little Camden. He's 30 weeks old now, which is crazy in itself. Regardless, I feel like he's doing something new every day. It seems like over night, he's doing things that he didn't do the day before. I can't keep up with him!! But I'm thankful I have this blog to use as a journal to keep track of it all.

The biggest milestone - today - on his 30 Week birthday, my baby started crawling. Not army crawling, like actually crawling on his hands and knees crawling. He has been doing it here and there, maybe one or two "steps" but it hasn't been consistent...until this morning. Wow.

Another big thing this week: we've started giving him real foods. We've decided to make all of his baby food instead of using the jarred stuff, so I have control over exactly what he's getting. I made Bobby take me to Whole Foods in Annapolis to buy all certified Organic produce. So far, we've given him peas (they made him gag), carrots (he doesn't seem to like them plain, so I've mixed the pureed stuff with rice cereal and he ate a LOT), and a slice of apple and pear to chew on. Oh, and Bananas, which he just spit out. Next on the list: green beans and acorn squash.

Last big thing this week: Baby Cam now has FOUR teeth. His fourth one just broke through yesterday. I can't believe it. They just started coming in right before his 5 month birthday and he's almost 7 months now and has four teeth. Poor guy, but he's been very good and only fussy a bit more. I'm so thankful. Everyone had me worried that it would be horrendous, but it hasn't been much different than he normally is *yet.*

Anyway, Happy {weekly} birthday to my little sprout. Please stop growing now, mmmk?

For those interested, he now weighs 17 pounds and 6 ounces :)

I have been unsuccessful in getting a picture of my little guy for our Christmas card. He moves SO fast now and I just can't get anything useful. This one, on the other hand, makes me laugh. He does little baby push-ups and scrunches up his nose when he does it. So cute.

I could get lost in those big, brown eyes forever.

The Army Crawl + A Few Photos

The last week or 2, Camden has learned how to do the Army Crawl. This means three things for me:

1) Our Christmas tree is no longer safe, so we put it up high this year.
2) Killian is no longer safe from grabby hands and he has vacated himself to higher ground.
3) I'll finally start losing my baby weight from bending over all the time to move Cam back to where he should be playing.

Our lives are about to start getting interesting! This video is a bit outdated since Camden started actually crawling TODAY. However, he first started this army crawl on Saturday November 19th. It was an overnight transition and I couldn't believe it!

Anyway, here are a few videos and pictures from the last 2 weeks. Enjoy! (All were taken with my iPhone, so sorry for the quality!)

Trying out his "new" high chair!

Baby loves him some rice cereal... regular food, not so much. We've only tried carrots, peas, apple, banana and pear so far.

HAIL to the Redskins!

A big milestone for me and my business... one of my pictures is the front cover of What's Up Weddings magazine and it's on all newsstands in the Baltimore/Annapolis and Eastern Shore areas! My first glossy :)

I took my Dad to New York City with me on one of MY business trips! We had a great time walking around.

Our Christmas tree. We bought a fake one this year for logistical reasons, but it's still pretty! It was up and decorated the week before Thanksgiving, too. Don't hate.

Boo! Baby likes to roll himself under the couch and poke his head out! He's quite cute, if I do say so :)

Camden hasn't been feeling well this week, so there's extra cuddle time for Mama.

My boys before Thanksgiving! Aren't they handsome?? (Please pardon my messy house. I have no excuses.)

Thankful

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs.

Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his

we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with praise;

give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;

his faithfulness continues through all generations. --Psalm 100

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all.

28 & 29 Weeks

Ok, please forgive me as I did not blog last week's pictures AND I'm a day late in posting this week's pictures. These past few weeks have been ca-razy with picture taking, child raising, traveling and thanksgiving-preparing. I do apologize.

Our boy is growing leaps and bounds this week. In the past week, Camden has started army crawling/crawling on his knees and he also cut his THIRD tooth (up top). I can't believe that this time last week, he couldn't crawl and now he's everywhere. For those of you who've met Baby Cam, the boy does not stay still for long anyway, but now he's mobile. With the new mobility comes poor naps and the need for "preventative discipline." We now need to start training him by setting boundaries and such. This is going to be a long process, I can tell.

Anyway, this is short because I have a million pies to bake before tomorrow and Camden has just crawled into my craft closet where there are lots of shiny things...BUT I leave you with last weeks' and this week's pictures. I have a video of him army crawling, which I will update later. For now, have a very happy Thanksgiving. We have SO much to be thankful for this year. We've been praying every day that God would give us a thankful heart not just tomorrow, but every day of the year. It is so good to give Him praise!

I'm sorry for the funny color. It was dark out when I took the picture and didn't have my flash.

What a little turkey! Love him.

He's squealing here, if you couldn't tell.

Oh, how I could stare into those dark brown eyes all day long. Don't even get me started on those cheeks and dimply knuckles!

Yes, we decorated for Christmas already. I couldn't wait! This year since we have a mobile bub, we decided to put the Christmas tree UP to spare any constant visits to the christmas tree. But nonetheless, he found the sparkly, blue button on the computer and goes to that every.time.we.put.him.down. Must find a solution for that.
