Glory Days

Words cannot even begin to describe the pain I felt while gazing up the three flights to our apartment this evening as I came home from work. Every single muscle used to climb stairs was sore. I've rarely felt so many pains at once: burning, aching, stiffness, cracking. Ouch. By the way I am describing my walk up the stairs this afternoon, one would think that I am a frail old lady who hasn't used her legs in 50 years. Well, my friends, try 4 years, although it was much more than my legs that I was using...

A few weeks ago, my boss and another girl from work asked me if I wanted to join an adult field hockey league in the area. Thrilled at the opportunity to re-live my glory days from high school (see my stunning High School field hockey team - I am in the very front on the left), I agreed and signed my eager self up! Last night was our first game, so I showed up in my cute little athletic 'squort' (Skirt/Shorts) and my little white ribbon in my hair, brand new shin guards, the whole deal. I show up to find some very professional-looking women passing (now when I say passing, I mean one girl is at one end of the 'field' and another girl is at the far other end) a hockey ball like they've been playing every day since high school. My boss and I look at each other - mortified. Thankfully women less svelte than myself showed up in very frumpy outfits, I might add, which slightly relieved my angst. About 25 girls showed up, which was more than enough for 2 full teams, and thankfully, there were plenty of subs to be had.

Our referee called us over to begin. "No rules, really," she said, "I'll just blow the whistle if I see any sticks slam into any faces!" Gasp!! She chuckles and walks onto the field. I am doomed. I haven't even so much as picked up my stick in about 4 years and even before that, I had only played for 2 years! The whistle blew to start and I immediately ran up the field. By the time I had reached the circle to help assist, I could feel my lungs start to cave in. I paused to catch my breath and low and behold, I was wheezing. Pathetic. I stayed in for most of the 15 minute half, which I was very proud of myself for doing. We played for 2 hours that night. No one was keeping score, and I felt much better about myself by scoring 2 goals and making a few assists. Plus, some of those rough looking girls weren't so good. Perhaps they were trying to re-live their glory days too.

So, as I made my way out to my car after the game, I could feel all of my muscles beginning to tense up. I just knew I was going to be sore tomorrow. To ease that feeling, I stopped at McDonalds (or Fat Donalds, as Bobby likes to call it) to treat myself to a strawberry milkshake! So moral of the story, try getting into shape before starting any physically intensive exercise AND don't live on the 3rd story of an apartment building. Lesson learned.

The VonTrapp Family... Players?

This past Saturday, Bobby and I drove up to Baltimore (yet again!) to visit with my family for my Dad's 65th Birthday party! Along with a bottle of wine and a new bottle opener (theirs is about 45 years old), we sent my parents to go to "High School Musical" at the Hippodrome in Baltimore! For some reason, they both LOVE that movie and convince me to watch it every time I visit! So, for their 43rd Anniversary and my Dad's Birthday, they're going to "wanna be Fabulous!" (---movie quote for those who have not seen the movie!)

To top that off, my Mom gave my Dad a saxophone!! When my Dad was a frat boy at University of Maryland, he was in a dance band - yes, what we now only see in the movies: matching gold blazers, metal instruments, girls in poodle skirts, etc. None of his five children has ever seen him play! My mom also convinced my Grandfather to bring his Accordion down with him! I haven't seen HIM play since I was about eight years old! So after dinner all of us sat around with some chocolate cake and listened to my Dad and Grandfather re-live their glory days and they played some old classics! It was so funny to see all (with the exception of the 2 blonde's in NC) the nieces and nephews dance around to the sound of these lost instruments and shout "Play More, Grampa!! More songs, PopPop!" Both played splendidly well for not having played in so many years!

For those of you clueless as to what an accordion is or what it sounds like, there's a short video we caught from the evening! The only thing missing from the ensemble was a little, "Do - a deer, a female deer, Ray - a drop of golden sun....!!!"

Now that I've had time to download my pictures from the past few days, here are some more pictures of Baby Ben! He was so good the entire time everyone was holding him! Nick and Amanda have headed home for their first night with the baby tonight! Good luck guys!

A happy Mommy with Baby...

A VERY proud Jido (Je-doh - Arabic for 'Grandfather')!

And of course, Aunt Melissa!

In the meantime, Bobby's Aunt Amy just had her baby this evening! Bethany Rose came in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces. We haven't been able to visit them yet, but we look forward to meeting little Bethany! This is Amy's fourth baby, so little Bethany will have lots of wonderful older siblings to play with!

More to come!!! Stay tuned...

Baby Love

Yesterday, February 11, 2008 at 12:39 p.m. Benjamin Patrick Barrick was welcomed into the family as the first Barrick grandchild! For Bobby's younger brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Amanda, Benjamin (Ben) is their first! Mommy, Daddy and baby are doing fine! Bobby and I drove up to Baltimore today to visit the new family in the hospital. Let me tell you, I have never seen such a cheerful new mother the day after giving birth! Anyway, congratulations Nick and Amanda and welcome Baby Ben! Here is just one picture for now, but you will be seeing a lot more soon because he is SO CUTE!
