An Introduction

Hello, I'm a mother.

Over the past week, we've been through the ringer. We've spent a total of 4 nights in the hospital and finally left with one very healthy, very happy little boy.

Bobby and I cannot take our eyes off of this little babe. His every movement, sound and face keep us completely entertained. We look at each other and are just overwhelmed with love, joy, happiness, thankfulness, and about 102893 other emotions all at the same time.

While I only have a few minutes to sit at the computer right now, I promise to blog his birth story and the series of events over the last week. So many of you are asking, and I promise to deliver (ha, ha...pun not intended)!

For now, I want to introduce to you our sweet, little baby:

Camden George Barrick
May 3, 2011
9 lbs, 1 oz, 22 inches
Practically perfect in every way <3

You can expect one of these pictures at least once a week for the next year. I'm sorry, but I have to. Baby's mama is a photographer.

Camden is so long! A lot of those 9 pounds is in his length. Oh, and his cheeks.

I love these eyes looking up at me every morning. Best feeling in the world.

Camden tucks his lower lip in when he's in deep sleep and when he's playing. It's so adorable!

10 fingers and 10 toes. Check.

Camden has the crooked Barrick pinky finger. Every man in the Barrick family has this trait :)

He sits with his hands like this all the time. I do this when I'm cold. Like Mama, Like Son?

It's ok if you want to kiss these cheeks through the computer screen.

I am so thankful to have my Mom here this week helping out. I think she likes the time holding a new baby :) Despite this face, he really was enjoying his time with Grandma! We've been calling this face the Stink Eye.

That's more like it!

New Life

Never in my life have I been required to trust in the Lord as much as I am now.

There is nothing I can do to make this baby come any faster. Sure, I ate a whole pineapple by myself. Yes, Bobby and I ate spicy Mexican food for an entire weekend. You bet I took a few walks in this gorgeous weather we've been having. Along with a slew of other "sure fire" techniques recommended by those silly "old wives," nothing is going to move this baby budge except for God's swift hand and that baby's will.

Since tonight is the eve of Easter, I've been thinking a lot about the meaning of it and the fact that I am about to experience new life at its finest and most raw form. I always loved that my birthday was in the Spring (I turned 25 a few weeks ago). Normally, everything is coming into bloom and the world just lights up as it's decorated with pale green sprouts, dusty pink blooms and a whole lot of promises that after a dark and dead winter, Christ renews the earth and breathes life into it, making all things new. On top of a new year of life that I'm given on the 12th of April every year (a blessing in itself), I'm also filled with hope that after death, LIFE is promised to those who believe and trust in Jesus.

"I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live, even though he dies." - John 11:25

Pregnancy (and labor, I imagine) has been a death of sorts. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being pregnant. But a death in the mental and emotional sense. Everything I've done during this pregnancy is not for me, but for the healthy of this baby. I took no medicine to protect the baby from any harmful chemicals. I ate healthy food (except for my precious, processed sugar cereals). I'm choosing not to take any drugs during labor to protect the baby from anything potentially harmful (of course, my "sacrifices" are nothing compared to Jesus' death on the cross for our wrong doings). Pregnancy has rather been a death to myself and my selfishness. I am so thankful that this baby is due to arrive around this time of year. A reminder that after the "death" (the death of my own will and spirit) of labor, a new life will arise and give hope to his Mama and Daddy, and hopefully, everyone's life this sweet baby touches.

I still think that I haven't even began to grasp the miracle that is about to ensue. But I'm waiting. Patiently waiting for this new life to fill us up and bring us hope after a long and dead winter. Thank you, Jesus.

Happy Easter, dear readers!

Cloth Diapering: The Beginning

I get it every time. At this point, it's almost a challenge to see who makes the best inquizitive face at me. Do you know what I'm talking about? Oh yes, it's the responses I get when I tell people that we plan on cloth diapering our child.

Since I got pregnant, I've discovered these deep-rooted feelings to get "back to basics." I plan to breastfeed for at least a year, I want to make my own baby food, I want to eat organic produce with our family, and... I want to cloth diaper. Armed with the hope and information from blogs like Josiah's Nest and Young House Love, we've made the decision to use cloth diapers for our little guy.

Before you can even locate an old fashioned cloth diaper in Target, let me give you the rundown as to why we decided to cloth diaper.

Benefits:
1) Cost. This was the main reason we chose to cloth diaper. Look for a cost comparison below to give you an idea.

2) Health Benefits. From what I've read and from people I've talked to who cloth diaper, cloth babies have less instances of diaper rash. I attribute this to the chemicals used in most disposable diapers can be irritating to a baby's skin.

3) Comfort of the Baby. Cloth Diapered babies are said to have WAY less "blow outs." You know... the kind of "mess" that goes up the back and out the seat?? Apparently, cloth diapers are fit so well to babies that instances of the infamous blow out are significantly reduced. Yes please! In addition to reducing the amount of waste we're now not going to have to clean up, the custom fit of the one-size diapers are supposed to be much more comfortable for babies. The organic cotton is also very gentle on their skin since it doesn't contain any chemicals.

4) Theoretical Early Potty-Training. I haven't read too much about the reality of this claim yet, but cloth diapered babies are known to potty train earlier than babies in disposables. Since the baby can feel when he's wet (in disposables, they can't feel it as much since they have moisture-wicking chemicals), he is said to have an awareness of this topic at an earlier age. So far, Camden is much more aware that he's wet in a cloth as opposed to a disposable.

5) They're adorable. It's no secert that I love a chubby baby. Having a chubby baby BUM with an adorable, colorful and cheerful diaper on it?? Sounds awesome. BumGenius diapers, as well as lots of other brands come in a bunch of fun colors. Cloth diapers are a bit bulkier than disposables, but I haven't read of anyone complaining that clothes don't fit right.

6) Ease of Use. This is a shocker for everyone. Especially those who still think cloth diapering consists of pins, folding and diaper services. Pretty much ALL of the cloth diapers out there now do NOT require a service and are made to look and function JUST like a disposable diaper. A lot of cloth diapers use velcro. Ours have snaps. Apart from the added laundry, cloth diapering should be a breeze.

7) Better for the Environment. The hippie in me feels a need to include this one, but I must admit, it was not the main element in our decision to cloth diaper. Since we keep our trash can in the garage, I am looking forward to not having to smell old diapers in the garbage. Also, when we visit other houses? We're not leaving stinky diapers in your guest bathroom trash can (a pet peeve of mine. Please. Bag it, and take it home with you or at least take it out to the big trash instead of the one in the house!).

8) Resale Value. If after a few weeks we decide we HATE cloth diapers?? The resale value on these puppies - even USED - is awesome. Since the diapers themselves are a little pricey to start out, it's reassuring to know that this is not a "no going back" situation.

Now, I know you are asking this question in your head, so let me just answer it for you. Are we not going to use disposable diapers at all?! Of course we will! I forsee some traveling in our future when this little guy is still in diapers. Our plan is if we're staying somewhere longer than 24 hours, we will be using disposables. However, if I'm just running out to Target or we're going up to spend the day with family in Baltimore/Annapolis, we still plan on using cloth (thanks to the handy wetbags!). We were sent home from the hospital with a slew of disposables and wipes. We used those for the first week or so while Camden's cord was still on and his circumcision was still healing. We switched to cloth seamlessly around his 2 week birthday.

What does it take to cloth diaper these days? You'll be happy to know that there are no diaper pins or inserts in our list. While every brand of cloth diaper are different (even styles within the same brand are different), these are the items we purchased for the BumGenius Elemental All-In-One diapers. Here's what we're armed with:

1) A stock of 18 cloth diapers. We chose Bum Genius Organic Elemental All-in-One diapers. From what I've read, this is a good amount if I intend to do laundry at least every other day. Aren't they cute?! I love all the fun colors. $400.00

2) A diaper sprayer. This is an attachment that connects to the water supply in any toilet and hangs off the side. It took Bobby 10 minutes to install. $44.00

3) Cloth Wipes. These are basically just baby wash cloths. If I'm washing diapers anyway, why not wash the wipes as well? Some people use a cleaning agent to put on the wipes, but we're just intending on using water from a little squirt bottle. Clean and free! These could easily be hand made. They're just terry cloth squares with finished edges. Free! All were gifts ($9.00 for pack of 15)

4) A Diaper Pail and Pail Liner. Wet diapers and wipes go directly in here. Messy diapers go in here after they are sprayed off. When it comes time to do laundry, everything (pail liner included!) goes right into the washing machine! We have one pail and 2 liners. $24.99 and $14.95

5) Wet Bags. These probably aren't necessary, but I think they're adorable and functional apart from cloth diapering. I bought two of them to rotate out. I plan on keeping one in the diaper bag for on-the-go diaper changes. Adorable, no?? I love the little whales! When changing diapers on the go, these can easily be tossed into the wash with everything else. Also good for keeping wet bathing suits in the summer :) $17.95 each

6) Clothes Rack Dryer. This probaby isn't necessary either, but I thought it would be a good item to have for a few reasons. One, I mentioned above that laying the diapers out in the sun will "bleach" the diapers naturally. I thought this would be easy to do outside and during the summer on a clothes rack. Two, I absolutely love the idea of hanging clothes out to dry! Plus, air-drying anything prolongs the life of...anything. I hope that this spring, summer and fall, I can use nature's goodness and mostly air dry the diapers, instead of running the dryer, saving us some cash on our gas and electric bill, too! $13.00 at Target

Total Cost for Cloth Diapering for One Child. Period: $523.89

Now, there is the question about washing the diapers. Since we bought organic cotton diapers AND baby's skin is usually pretty sensitive, we wanted to choose a detergent that would help prolong the life of the diapers, be safe for our Little One's skin, AND jive with our High Efficiency (HE) Washing Machine. I used THIS CHART for some guidance. Thankfully, I'm a member of AmazonMom, so most of these detergents I can buy online for a really awesome price. I can even have them automatically shipped to my house if I wanted! Instead of trying just one brand, I bought three initially, just to try out. If one doesn't work so well for us, we'll just try another brand. A lot of people have asked me about staining. Obviously, the "messy" diapers can cause stains. Part of the care of cloth diapers require that you only use a tiny bit of bleach every 6 months or so. So, to take care of the staining (if there is any), it is suggested that you lay the diapers in the sun for a little while and voila! Stains be gone.

There is one last thing to think about now: Routine. How and the heck are we going to keep on top of changing diapers (and having enough to get us through until we wash them), using wipes, spraying off the dirty diapers, etc?? I have no idea. But I think it's one of those things that we'll try several different routines, and adapt what works best for us and come up with our own plan. Right now, here's what we do:

1) Remove dirty diaper.
2) If it's just wet, it goes straight into the diaper pail. If it's messy, it gets a spray down with the sprayer and then goes into the diaper pail. Dirty wipes go into the diaper pail too, and everything gets washed together.

Once we get down to a few clean diapers, we'll do a load of dirty diapers, pail liner included. They only require one wash on a regular cycle and about an hour in the dryer on a low heat setting. Once that's finished, we'll hang the clean, mostly dry diapers on the standing clothes rack to dry out completely. After a few hours, they are completely dry and get folded in half, and put into the diaper drawer in our changing table! Easy, right? This routine is bound to change, so be on the lookout for a cloth diapering update in the coming months! I know, I know. You're SO excited for that ;)

So there you have it. Our plan for cloth diapering. If you're reading this and considering the switch to cloth diapering, please PLEASE read the websites above for more information. I'm not an expert (really, I have no idea what I'm doing!), and there is so much helpful information out there that you can use. For all those mom's out there who cloth diaper - do you have any suggestions or good resources to share? I'm all ears!

Thanks for humoring me and if you've already checked out of this post, then check back soon for non-diapering talk!

Baby Blues

No, I'm not sad and I don't have the blues... what I do have is a birthing play list.

If you are making a funny face at my blog right now, I don't blame you. It may sound a little strange to make a soundtrack to one of the most painful experiences of your life, but here's the kicker: it's supposed to help you relax.

For the past 12 weeks, Bobby and I have been attending classes for The Bradley Method of child birth. They advocate for a completely natural, unmedicated childbirth experience, along with healthy nutrition during pregnancy, and breastfeeding after pregnancy. All good things, right? We chose this method for several reasons (I mainly chose it since I'm the one who has to actually give birth!), but the main reason was because they also advocate their methods to be "husband-coached," meaning Bobby has to attend classes, help me with the exercises, and be my support during labor. We got into this pregnancy together, and I'll be darned if we're going to get out of this pregnancy together!

I could sing songs about these classes... even if you are not planning on an unmedicated childbirth, the information alone has been SO helpful. A lot of my fear of childbirth was a result of not knowing what my body was doing and how labor would go. I'm so thankful for these classes, which have calmed my nerves about a non-medicated birth. It has also made me realize more and more that women's bodies were MADE for childbirth. We don't have big hips for nothing!!! In the bible, Jesus also promises us that he won't give us anything more than we can handle. Equipped with this promise and the techniques we've learned in class, I feel hopeful and confident.

Back to the point: the play list. The crux of the Bradley Method is relaxation. Sounds good, right? I don't know about you, but music is a big contributor to my relaxation in general. When I've had a bad day at work, I listen to some calming music. When I'm running or walking, I listen to more upbeat music. When I'm trying to go to sleep or on an airplane, I listen to classical music. So my goal for creating a play list to help me relax during labor was to come up with (several hours worth of) calming music. Emphasis on "several hours worth."

Just for kicks and giggles, I thought I'd share my top song selections with you to give you an idea. Perhaps if you're looking for some calming music yourself, you can plug into iTunes and get them for yourself. Some of the couples in the class chose only classical music, but that's not something I normally listen to, so I chose songs of different genres to settle my nerves.

Enjoy!

"Your Love is Extravagant" - The Almost
"Clair de Lune" - From the Twilight Soundtrack
"You and Me" - Dave Matthews Band
"How He Loves" - Jared Anderson
"Penelope's Theme" - The Brothers Bloom Soundtrack
"For the Summer" - Ray LaMontagne
"Here Comes the Sun" - Beatles
"The Wind Cries Mary" - Jimi Hendrix
"Raining in Baltimore" - Counting Crows
"Disco" - Howie Day
"If I Fell in Love With You" - Beatles
"Bruised" - The Bens
"She's got a Way" - Billy Joel
"Desperado" - The Eagles
"Lay Baby Lay" - Bob Dylan
"Tupelo Honey" - Van Morrison
"One for my Baby" - Frank Sinatra
"Landslide" - Stevie Nicks
"She's Only Happy in the Sun" - Ben Harper
"Breathe" - Taylor Swift
"Carolina on my Mind" - James Taylor
"Stir it Up" - Bob Marley
"Sherpa" - Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
"Pitseleh" - Elliott Smith
"Sweet Afton" - Nickel Creek
"Kingdom Come" - Coldplay
"Sail Away" - David Gray
"Please, Please, Please" - The Smiths

That's a pretty good summary. I have about 5 hours worth of music on my play list, but I'm still adding to it. We've been going to sleep to the list every night so I can get used to the songs being soothing. So far, so good! Now if only I didn't have to get up every other hour to use the bathroom, I'd be all set :)

Any suggestions for more soothing songs? I'm all ears and have a few more iTunes gift cards to burn through!

40 Weeks!

Why yes! I'm still here...pregnant. With child. Knocked up. Smuggling a watermelon. Whatever clever or witty phrase you can come up with to say or mean "still pregnant."

Going to work was the worst today. Everyone who passed by my desk asked me "Oh, you're still here?!" or "I wasn't expecting to see you today!" And for the record, it's not all that encouraging to tell me that your wife's baby arrived 2 weeks late. Take a good look at my swollen feet (which, by the way, have outgrown even my largest shoes) before you say things like that to me, mmmk??

So yes, 40 weeks and still going. No signs of labor yet. I think our sweet Little is just happy as can be in there. I don't blame him. It's supposed to rain for the next few days... I wouldn't want to come in to a thunderstorm either!

My one sister has called me every day for a week, just to make sure I'm not in labor yet. My Mom writes me e-mails once or twice a week with the words of the hymns she used to sing to us as kids (which I haven't been able to remember the words to). My other sister and I e-mail back and forth every day, exchanging ideas about child-reading (she only has 2 months left until HER little guy gets here!). Every time Bobby calls his parents, I can hear his Dad yelling, "Is she in labor?!?! We're on our way!!!!"

The most encouraging thing so far as been a bible verse that my Mom shared. She said she used to recite this to herself every pregnancy (she had 5 kids):

"You will keep in perfect peace
those whose trust in You,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!" - Isaiah 26:3

I'm finding it extremely difficult to find peace when I have trouble sleeping, or when I get anxious about not knowing WHEN this little baby is going to arrive. I have to throw my hands up daily in submission to Christ and His will and just trust that He knows what He's doing.

You'll have to excuse my outfit here...and my hair. I have no explanation other than that I'm 40 weeks pregnant and I. just. don't. care.

Have a great week everyone!

If you want to follow Bobby and I real-time, follow us on Twitter: @MelissaBarrick or @RGBarrick. I'm sure one of us will be updating when we're en route to the hospital and when Baby Barrick arrives!
